Are Magnetic Filters Worth It for my boiler?

A magnetic filter is designed to catch most of the sludge that circulates around your homes central heating system. If there is no magnetic filter fitted, this sludge (a mix of metallic and non-metallic deposits) builds up to the point where your radiators create cold patches which in turn reduces your boiler’s efficiency.

While a magnetic filter does cost money, it will save you in the long run and if you are trying to make your boiler last longer then a magnetic filter is definitely a wise decision.
A magnetic filter can help extend your boiler’s lifespan and reduce your energy bills.

Why do I need a magnetic filter?

Having a magnetic filter installed will:

  • Reduce your annual energy bills by up to 6% (based on an average 3 bedroom home)
  • Increase the efficiency of your boiler
  • Reduce the wear and tear of the boiler and reduce the chances of a breakdown
  • Extend the lifespan of the boiler
  • Reduce your carbon footprint

Are there side effects if I do not have a magnetic filter to remove the sludge?

If you choose not to have a magnetic filter installed, the most significant consequence is that you could invalidate your manufacturer’s warranty. But if you don’t get the sludge removed from your central heating system, there can be some serious side effects including:

  • A ‘Kettling’ noises coming from your boiler
  • Poor performance from your radiators not heating properly due to cold patches
  • Your boiler overheating, causing it to shut down

A magnetic filter collects these dirt particles as they’re coming through the system and they can be removed during an annual boiler service.

It should be clear now that having a magnetic filter fitted to your boiler has many benefits.

Most magnetic filters are installed at the same time as a new boiler is fitted but you can still have one fitted on an existing boiler.

If your boiler system is already filled with sludge because you don’t have a magnetic filter fitted then you will need one of three types of flush performed:

  • Chemical Flush
  • Power Flush
  • Advanced Flush

We can provide a powerflush service which usually takes several hours.

When a powerflush is carried out, your central heating system will need to be dosed with an inhibitor to keep the pH levels of the water reasonable. This also slows and prevents the build up of magnetite sludge once you’ve got your system cleaned.
