A radiator in your home is an essential part of your central heating system but do you know how a radiator actually works?

Radiators work through a heat transfer process called convection. A radiator is filled with water which is heated by your gas boiler.  As the water in the radiator heats up, it heats the air around the radiator via convection and this hot air then begins to move around the room helping the warm air to circulate.

A radiator gets its hot water from the boiler and it does this through connecting pipes that are generally under the floorboards. The hot water gets pumped from the boiler through your central heating system into the radiators in your home in a looping process. This means that the hot water passes from one radiator to another which does mean that as it flows through the radiators, it looses its heat energy and starts to cool down. By this point however, the hot water is reaching the end of the loop, reaches the gas boiler and gets heated up again before continuing the cycle.

This does mean that the radiator closest to the boiler gets the water at its hottest and the radiator at the end of the loop will be the coldest. Balancing our the heat using thermostat valves on each radiator means you can control the amount of hot water entering each radiator.
