How safe is my boiler?

While a smoothly running boiler is a wonderful thing, it is a heating system that uses gas to generate heat.  So how safe is a gas boiler?

A faulty boiler can cost you money to repair and leave your home freezing cold in the depths of Scottish winter but it can also be dangerous.  There are a variety of issues can can arise on a gas boiler.  Some are minor and some are major.  The best way to prevent and reduce the chances of these issue from happening is through annual boiler servicing which can spot issues quickly and get them fixed for far less than what it would cost if you leave them to develop into serious issues.

What if my boiler looses pressure?

An efficient boiler should sit at around 1.5 bar of pressure.  Low pressure and high pressure will trigger automatic shut down procedures on a boiler.  So while you might be concerned about your boiler pressure, there are safety precautions to prevent anything bad from happening so this is not something to worry about.  If your boiler pressure keeps dropping, you may have a leak in the system.  Call us today to arrange an inspection of your central heating system to check it over for you.

What if my boiler is leaking water?

If your boiler is leaking water then there has been a part failure.  While a leak itself is not dangerous, you must make sure that it is not coming into contact with the electrical components of the boiler.  Turn the boiler off and call us today to get it fixed. Don’t try to fix it yourself.

What if my boiler is making strange noises?

A whistling sound like what you might hear from a kettle is a common issue with boilers.  It is caused by air build up inside the central heating system.  It is not dangerous but needs to be fixed so if your boiler is making strange, whistling, banging or gurgling sound then call us today and get your boiler repaired by our qualified gas engineers.

What if the pilot light in my boiler has changed colour?

If your boilers pilot light has changed colour from orange to yellow then this is a sign of poor combustion.  This is a very serious issue and needs to be dealt with as quickly as possible. Turn off your boiler immediately and call us. As a Gas Safe Engineer, we can fix the problem.  Do not let a non qualified gas engineer attempt to fix this.

With this issue, you may also notice a smell of gas and possibly brown or black scorch marks on the boiler. Another sign of an issue with this is condensation on the inside of your windows.  If you have noticed this, check your boiler for any other sign of this issue.

What if the pilot light keeps going out?

Your boiler needs to be checked by one of our gas engineers.  It may relate to one of the other issues mentioned but regardless, it needs looked at ASAP.

What if my condensate pipe has frozen?

Yes it can get cold in Scotland and that can can bring about freezing pipe issues.  You can fix this yourself by pouring warm (but not boiling) water over the frozen pipe to defrost it.  You can even try wedging a hot water bottle next to the pipe to slowly melt the ice.  If this doesn’t fix the problem then call us.  If your pipes continue to freeze on a regular basis then we can fit a range of protective solutions to prevent this from happening again.

What if my thermostat stops working?

Your thermostat is a vital part of your boiler and central heating system.  So when it stops working, it can be a big inconvenience.  But there are a few simple checks you can carry out before you call us. Has the timer on the thermostat been changed?  Has someone altered the temperature settings?  If it is a wireless unit, does it simply need new batteries?  Another issue might simply be that the signal is not reaching the boiler.  If you have either repositioning the thermostat or added new furniture in the ‘path’ of the signal, that may be all it takes to stop it from working.  If none of these provides the solution, then it very well may be that your thermostat has simply developed a problem and needs to be replaced.  And of course, we can replace your thermostat for you.

What if my boiler keeps turning off?

If your boiler is turning off itself then it will most likely be flashing an error code number.  Check your boiler handbook to match the fault number with the issues.  From low pressure to a lost connection with the thermostat, a lack of water in the system to something else.  Find out what it is, call us and we can fix it for you.
