How to read your gas meter
If you are not used to reading a gas meter and supplying your gas energy firm a meter reading then it can be a daunting process.
Because before you can read your gas meter, you need to know where it is. You would be amazed how many of our customers do not know where their gas meter actually is.
There are a few easy steps you can take to easily figure it out. If you live in a similar style home to your neighbours, simply ask one of them. If you are renting your property then ask your landlord. Commonly though, your gas meter will be either in the kitchen located in a cupboard or in the hallway cupboard or outside in a meter box. The meter box may require a key to open it.
There are three types of gas meter in Scotland.
- Dial Meters
- Smart Meters
- Digital Meters
Gas Dial Meters
A dial gas meter will have a number of dials which you should read from left to right. If the pointer on a dial is between two numbers, you should take the lower of the two numbers. The only exception to this is if the dial is between 9 and 0. In this case, you should take the 9.
A digital gas meter is a relatively straigh forward process. Read the numbers from left to right but ignore the numbers shown in red. If there are any digits in a red surround, they can also be ignored. You can also ignore any digits after the decimal point
One of the things that makes a smart meter smart is that you don’t need to read it. It will automatically send your gas supplier a meter reading.
If you think there is something wrong with your gas meter, you should call your energy supplier to discuss it with them first.
