Remembering CORGI

It is not an anniversary of its replacement or any particular date of significance for us but we wanted to look back at CORGI and how it became Gas Safe in April 2009.

CORGI, or to use its full name ‘Council of registered gas installers) was first established in 1970 as a result of the gas explosion at Ronan Point.

Originally, registration with CORGI was voluntary but by 1991, it became mandatory for gas engineers to be registered.

At its height, CORGI had 110,000 registered individuals and 55,000 registered companies.

However CORGI, who also ran plumbing, electrical and ventilation registration schemes was not popular with everyone. Many engineers didn’t feel that CORGI was doing what needed to be done to stop non registered gas engineers from working.

Because of this (and other issues), CORGI was replaced in April 2009 by Gas Safe.  Gas Safe was now the official registered gas safety regulators which meant that only boiler engineers registered with Gas Safe certification could legally work on gas heating systems.
