When i get a new boiler installed, what size of boiler do I need?

When it comes to fitting a new combi boiler in your home, we can obviously advise you on the right size of boiler to have for your home. As a Which Trusted Trader, we are help to a high standard for both our quality boiler fitting as well as our overall service.

And while we can best advise you on the size of boiler your home needs in person, here is some basic ‘calculations’ and information that can be used to help you figure out what size of boiler your home may need.

Why picking the right boiler size is important

It’s simple really. An undersized boiler will always struggle to meet the daily demands of your house, from heating the bath to warming up the living room in the evening. A hard working underpowered boiler will actually cost you more in monthly energy bills because it is burning a lot more extra gas to try and keep up with your demands.

If you think of it in car terms, a small city hatchback car will burn more petrol trying to go fast whereas a fast sportscar will actually provide better fuel economy going at the same pace. Because it is designed to operate in a higher window of performance.

So what size of Combi Boiler does my house need?

The easiest way of figuring out what size of boiler you need can be broken down into how many bathrooms and/or bedrooms you have (based on modern style homes – though with the unique make up of home styles across Renfrewshire, Ayrshire etc, it is always best to speak to us directly about this).

1 Bathroom / 2 Bedroom House

A one bathroom home would generally require a smaller combi boiler like a 26kW (minimum). A modern combi boiler of this size would be happily capable of producing the heat you would generally require in a one bathroom home.

2 Bathroom / 3-4 Bedroom House

Homes with two bathrooms or one bathroom and one shower room (for example) would normally be suitable for a 29 / 30kW sized boiler (minimum). Though again, this can depend on the overall size of your home AND the age of the home. Older sandstone homes in Renfrewshire for example are not as efficient as new build homes and can require a larger boiler size to cope with the heat loss percentage of the older style homes.

3 or more Bathroom / 4-5 Bedroom Houses

If you live in a home with three bathrooms or more then you need to start looking towards the largest size of residential combi boilers available. 35kW boilers and above should be looked at for these sizes of homes.

Which boiler to go for

So that is how you can calculate roughly what size of boiler you may need but what about boiler brands? As a Baxi Approved Installer, you may assume that we push Baxi products. But our core objective is to get you the right combi boiler for your needs. What do we mean by that? Well if like lots of hot baths then boiler brand X with their specific sized boiler would be best as it produced hot water the fastest. If you are an eco-warrior and want the greenset and most energy efficient combi boiler then we can recommend the right eco friendly boiler for you. And so on.
