Pipe Insulation and Pipe Lagging

Central Heating Pipes that are exposed to the elements, or ones that are fitted to areas in a home that are not easily heated will loose more of the hot water heat energy as the water cools while passing along the colder pipes. It can also present a higher risk of freezing the pipes on cold winter nights.

The solution to this is pipe insulation and what is called pipe lagging. The cold air that can affect your homes heating pipes has a harder time reaching the pipes of your homes central heating system if they are protected by insulation.

As the hot water that has been heated by your homes gas boiler passes along the pipes from boiler to radiator or taps, it looses some of the heat.  Over the course of a year, the extra time your boiler has to run in order to compensate for this heat loss can easily add up in the form of extra energy costs and wasted energy which of course is also bad for the environment.

Pipe insulation and pipe lagging can help retain more of this heat which means that you use less heating energy, run your boiler for less time (cutting down on general wear and excess use), save you money on your monthly energy bills and cut down on green house gases.

What is lagging?

Lagging is simply the name for wrapping water pipes in insulation.  You may already add lagging of some description to your garden tap to prevent it freezing in the winter months. It is generally recommended to add pipe lagging to central heating pipes to help retain energy efficiency of your homes central heating system and help to prevent the pipes from freezing in the colder winter months that Scotland is famous for.

What is lagging made from?

Pipe lagging is commonly used throughout the UK to insulate central heating pipework, especially under floors and in loft spaces. It is commonly made from polyethylene rigid foam, flexible elastomeric foams and in older homes, it will originally have been wool lagging or (and we don’t want to worry you by saying this, asbestos).
