What is Gravity Fed Boiler System?
Gravity systems were once the most common type of boiler installed in homes across Scotland. They are a lot less common now because combi boilers provide so many advantages over this older system.
If you regarding your exiting boiler as ‘open vent boiler’ ‘heat only boiler’ or ‘conventional boiler’ then you have a gravity boiler system in your home.
What are the downsides to a gravity fed boiler system?
One of the most noticeable downsides to a gravity fed boiler is the poor water pressure which is, as the name suggests, down to the flow generated by gravity. In tenement flats (for example) where there is no opportunity to locate the water tank high up in a loft, the water pressure for a shower can be very poor unless your plumber or boiler installer has fitted a shower pump.
On top of this, the cold water storage tanks for gravity boilers have to be installed in lofts and history has shown that they can often become vulnerable to frost damage and eventually water leaks which can damage your homes interior.
Switching from a Gravity Fed Boiler to a Combi Boiler
If you have never had a combi boiler fitted and are switching from a conventional, gravity fed boiler system then there is some set up work that is required. From installing new gas piping to installing a flue and condensate pipe, there are differences that we can talk you through. But one of the most important and beneficial reasons to switch from a conventional boiler to a combi boiler is energy efficiency. If you are still running an older gravity fed conventional boiler system then a switch to a combi boiler can see a saving of up to 40% per year on your energy bills. Multiple this by a few years and you can quickly see why the initial investment in having a combi boiler installed can pay for itself so quickly.
